Meet the People Behind SMART Reviews

Founder, CEO

Kate Hoffmann

Kate Hoffmann is the founder of SMART Reviews, bringing an uncommon blend of clinical experience and legal industry knowledge to the complex world of mass tort litigation.

Before entering the legal field, Kate worked as a healthcare professional, developing a strong foundation in patient care, medical documentation, and the ability to assess critical information in high-pressure environments. She later transitioned into legal services, earning her degree and building experience within both plaintiff and defense practices, including work with a large mass tort defense firm and an established plaintiff firm.

This cross-disciplinary background shaped the way Kate approaches claim review. She understands the medical realities behind a claimant's story, the legal considerations that influence case evaluation, and the practical demands facing firms managing large volumes of claims. Rather than viewing these elements separately, she brings them together to provide a more informed and thorough approach to case assessment.

Kate founded SMART Reviews to bring that perspective directly to law firms. Through detailed claim reviews, validation, quality control, and fraud identification, SMART Reviews helps attorneys gain a clearer understanding of the cases within their portfolios and address potential concerns before they become larger challenges.

Kate's work is grounded in a simple principle: better information leads to better decisions. By taking on the detailed review work that can be difficult to accommodate within a busy litigation practice, she gives firms an additional layer of insight and confidence as they manage their mass tort cases.

Director of Mass Tort Litigation

Carol Elliott

I’m Carol Elliott, Director of Mass Tort Litigation at SMART Reviews. I've been with SMART Reviews for over six years, and during that time I've had the opportunity to grow alongside an incredible team while helping build and manage complex mass tort projects.

My primary focus is leading our Secondary Intake department, where I work closely with my team to ensure potential cases are thoroughly investigated and developed. While Secondary Intake is my specialty, I'm involved in just about every aspect of mass tort management and enjoy collaborating across departments to help our clients, partners, and team members succeed. What I love most about my work is solving problems, improving processes, and finding ways to make things run more efficiently. No two days are ever the same, and that's exactly how I like it.

When I'm not working, you'll usually find me on the sidelines of a volleyball game, basketball court, or flag football field cheering on one of my six kids. Between a busy career, six children, and two dogs, life is rarely quiet, but I wouldn't have it any other way. The constant balancing act has taught me to be adaptable, organized, and always ready for whatever challenge comes next.

Director of Case Analysis

Katie Watson

I am an Executive Director with my primary focus on case analysis. I review complex medical records and medical facts to help build damages models for law firms, assess case value, identify potential strengths and weaknesses, and make recommendations to improve or increase damages. I also assist with case tiering and ranking, review Life Care Plans, create and validate medical malpractice reviews, and evaluate defense productions for potential concerns. One of the things I enjoy most is taking complicated medical information and translating it into clear, practical language so attorneys can feel confident in meetings, mediations, depositions, and trials.

What I love most about my work is the medical science behind it. I've always been naturally curious and genuinely enjoy digging into medical records, connecting the dots, and getting to the bottom of what happened and why. I'm someone who loves learning new things, and my brain is constantly thirsting for new knowledge. Whether it's a complex medical issue, a new area of research, or a challenging case, I enjoy the process of understanding how things work and continuing to expand my knowledge.

Outside of work, I live in eastern Alabama with my six-year-old daughter, our golden retriever Mila, and a slew of horses. Most of my free time is spent outside with my daughter—working with the horses, taking walks, swimming, or simply enjoying the outdoors, especially in the spring. On the rare day off from work and mom life, you can usually find me curled up with a good book or diving into a medical case study that has caught my attention. Learning doesn't really stop when the workday ends—it's something I genuinely enjoy in every aspect of life.

Director of Internal Operations

Kelly Plaisted

I’ve been with SMART Reviews for almost 10 years and currently serve as the Director of Internal Operations. I oversee HR and People Operations, support our department leaders, and help keep things running behind the scenes.

What I enjoy most about SMART Reviews is the people! I've had the opportunity to watch so many employees grow, take on new challenges, and move into new roles. I enjoy helping people solve problems and finding ways to make things work a little better for everyone.

I love to travel and am always planning my next adventure. I'm also an avid tree hugger and love being outdoors. One of my favorite things to do is hike and get lost in a forest full of trees for a few hours. I'm a huge animal lover, especially when it comes to geriatric dogs; the older and grumpier they are, the better.

Director of Business Development

Lauren Hines

My role at SMART Reviews is Business Development. I focus on building relationships with our law firm and marketing partners, as well as industry stakeholders. My role is centered on identifying new opportunities for SMART Reviews to support our clients through Secondary QC and additional litigation support services while helping to grow strategic partnerships across the industry.

My favorite thing about working at SMART Reviews is our commitment to doing things the right way. We operate on pillars I respect: transparency, integrity and accountability. It is rewarding to work for a company that is constantly looking for ways to improve the industry while delivering real value to our partners.

When I’m not working, you can usually find me with a book in hand, in the kitchen trying a new recipe, or spending time with my family and dogs. I enjoy staying active, exploring new places, and finding a good local coffee shop whenever I get the chance.

Principal, Operational Strategy

Scott Blackburn

I currently serve as the Business Operator at SMART Reviews, where I focus on building scalable systems, improving operational efficiency, and creating clear accountability across the organization. My passion lies in helping teams work smarter by implementing processes that support sustainable growth, strong leadership, and measurable results.

What I love most about SMART Reviews is the people, the company's vision, and its commitment to responsible, rapid growth. I’m especially energized by the long-term impact SMART Reviews is making on the legal services industry—helping create healthier, more efficient organizations through innovation, accountability, and operational excellence.

Outside of work, I’m an avid sports card collector, a self-proclaimed lawn enthusiast who takes pride in maintaining a championship-worthy yard, and a devoted father who enjoys watching my daughters excel in their respective sports. I also share my home with Sunshine, a Golden Retriever; Sammy, a Shih Tzu; and, of course, a cat. When I’m not working on process improvements or cheering from the sidelines, you'll likely find me following my favorite team, the San Antonio Spurs.

Chief Operations Officer

Nick Hoffmann

I’m currently serving as the Chief Operating Officer at SMART Reviews, where I help lead daily operations and support the team in delivering exceptional service to clients. One of the most rewarding parts of my role is helping the company grow alongside our founder and CEO, who happens to be my younger sister.

As a retired U.S. Army veteran, I bring a service-first mindset, leadership experience, and a commitment to helping others in everything I do. What I enjoy most about SMART Reviews is the flexibility, the strong team culture, and the opportunity to make a positive impact in people's lives every day.

Outside of work, I’m married to a wonderful woman, and proud to be part of a blended family of 12. Family is at the center of my life, and when I’m not spending time with loved ones, you'll likely find me tackling a home improvement project, planning a road-trip adventure, or looking for the next challenge to take on.
